The National Association of Realtors recently released an article with some great suggestions on keeping your home safe from water damage and what to do in the event of a flood or burst pipes. Here are the key steps outlined in their article for quick reference.

  • Block Water From Entry Points
  • Put in a Second Line of Defense
    • Sump pumps
    • French drains
    • Exterior waterproofing
    • Interior drain tiles
  • Boilers and furnaces should be elevated to keep from being flooded
  • Window wells should drain properly and be accessible for debris removal.
  • Alarm systems in your home should connect to a computer, the Internet, or a mobile device to warn you of impending disaster.
  • Act fast if water pours in
    • Turn off pipes once water starts flowing.
    • Prioritize people and pets. If water comes in fast and furiously, get everyone out.
  • Protect Your Pipes
    • Open cabinet doors to allow in warmer air and let faucets drip, both help avoid freezing when temperatures plummet.
